Why Timor-Leste?
Timor-Leste is a developing country with some of the worlds worst poverty indicators. Ranked 134th on the Human Development Index, the Timor-Leste population has a life expectancy at birth of 62.9 years and some of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. In addition, around 13,500 people in Timor-Leste are blind, with up to 85% of this blindness preventable.

Each year, St John partners with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) to send a team of volunteers to Timor-Leste to improve the eye health of the Oecussi population (a remote town located in the North Eastern corner of Timor-Leste) plus bring first aid awareness to the community. Generally, participants will travel between 7 and 10 days in Timor-Leste.

Participants of past Projects have described the Project as:
  • highly rewarding
  • a good pathway for young people interested in a career in the health professions or related fields
  • as helping participants to grow both personally and professionally
  • eye opening.

"Having the opportunity to travel to Oecussi has been hands down the best experience of my life." Participant
